Who We Are

The North Carolina Affiliate of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (NCACNM) is the state professional organization for certified nurse-midwives (CNMs). Founded in 1979 as a state chapter of the ACNM with national roots dating back to 1929, NCACNM is committed to setting the standard for excellence in midwifery education and practice in North Carolina. Our members provide healthcare throughout the lifespan, with a special emphasis on pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive health. NCACNM works with its members and other professional organizations, state agencies and programs to advance the well-being of birthing parents and infants through the practice of midwifery.

Certified nurse-midwives have been practicing in North Carolina since 1976. The first nurse-midwifery practice in the state was established in a private hospital in Lumberton. The only Nurse-Midwifery education program in the state started in 1992 at East Carolina University. Almost 300 certified nurse-midwives practice in a variety of settings from the Outer Banks to Asheville. CNMs work in hospitals, university medical centers, private practices, birth centers, military hospitals, family planning clinics, health departments and home birth practices. In 2015, CNMs attended 14,892 births, over 12% of all births in North Carolina.
